Finding Your Voice and Embracing the Bend in the Road: Reflections from the CLE Summer Conference

This summer, Attorney Stacy T. Garcia had the privilege of attending a dynamic and inspiring Continuing Legal Education (CLE) summer conference that brought together trial attorneys and thought leaders from around the globe to share insights on leadership, advocacy, and the evolving role of legal professionals.

One of the most memorable moments of the conference was hearing from Eliza Reid, the former First Lady of the Republic of Iceland. In a powerful keynote address, Ms. Reid spoke candidly about the importance of embracing your voicefinding your passion, and navigating the unexpected turns life presents—what she eloquently described as the “bend in the road.” Her message resonated deeply with attendees, reminding us that personal authenticity and resilience are essential not only in leadership but in every chapter of our lives.

Another highlight was a compelling session led by Carrin Patman, former U.S. Ambassador to Iceland and a seasoned trial attorney. Drawing from her unique dual career in law and diplomacy, Ambassador Patman illustrated how the core skills of a trial lawyer—persuasive communication, strategic thinking, and fearless advocacy—are just as vital in the realm of international relations. Her reflections underscored the versatility of legal training and the importance of speaking up and standing firm in one’s convictions, whether in a courtroom or on the global stage.

For Attorney Garcia, the conference was a reaffirmation of the power of voice, purpose, and adaptability. As the legal profession continues to evolve, events like these serve as a reminder that leadership is not confined to titles or roles—it’s about how we show up, how we advocate, and how we inspire others along the way.
